The world has become a virtual place, which means that the approaches we have to working has had to change.

It seems that one of the main areas that we have seen these changes occur is within remote working.

A few years ago, the idea of having a team that worked remotely, separately and away from your business premises may have seemed relatively far-fetched, but now this has become a reality.

Whilst this approach to working is great for employees, giving them the ideal approach to a work and life balance, it may not be the easiest to manage.

So, with this in mind, we have put together some top tips to help managers of remote teams, effectively manage those employees and ensure that productivity and quality of work is always at a high level.

Have a good work plan

How To Effectively Manage Remote Team - Have A Plan

There is a much better chance that your staff will work productively if they understand what is expected of them. The easiest way to do this is to prepare a daily, or weekly written plan of what the main tasks are that you expect them to achieve.

A group email is a simple way to do this, however, if you find that you need to frequently update people, or want to keep an eye on when things are completed, you may need to consider a task management tool instead.

Task Pigeon for example, provides a tool that makes it easy to create, assign and manage the tasks you and your team work on each day.

Get face time as regularly as you can

How To Effectively Manage Remote Team - Face to Face Communication

Communication can be tricky when you manage a remote team and the majority of it will be via text or email. The lack of getting face to face time with your team can be detrimental, which means that you need to schedule regular virtual face to face sessions.

These sessions give you a chance to share feedback and information, and you can see the nonverbal cues which form a huge part of communication.

Whilst you should aim to have regular face to face virtual meetings, this is not always possible. Having a simple and effective way to keep the communication flowing (especially when your team is across various time zones) is crucial. If people can’t respond in near real time it results in ongoing delays and potentially miscommunication between employees.

Know what your team need from you

How To Effectively Manage Remote Team - Offer Help

Just because your team is working remotely, that doesn’t mean that they are completely self-sufficient. In fact, just like a normal team, your staff will still need help and support from you. The best way to do this is to check in on them and see how they are getting on, and if there is any support that they need from you.

You should also encourage them to share their issues or achievement with you, that way you can be sure that you are giving them everything that they need.

Remote working is proving to be positive for so many people, and with some careful thought it doesn’t have to be impossible to manage a remote team!
