How A Two Year Old Blog Post Generated $1,000 in Revenue in 7 Days

In 2015 I wrote a blog post on a service I had used called “HeadTalker”. Little did I know that two years after hitting “publish” this post would lead to the first sales for Task Pigeon and over $1,000 in revenue being generated for us in seven days.

Here’s how it all unfolded…

I have always believed in sharing knowledge and giving back to the community. Two years ago I was just getting (re)started on my entrepreneurial journey after taking up a corporate role when I came across a service called “HeadTalker”.

For those of you who are not familiar with it, it is essentially a “crowd-sourcing” service where people commit their social media profile (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) to help spread a message you create on a specific day. Companies like sked social can schedule social media posts for peak times of the day and then the committed followers can share that content so more people can see it.

At the time I had a fairly negative view of the platform. I just found it a little too spammy, and unable to drive any quality traffic, and that’s essentially what I wrote in the post at the time.

Fast forward to 2017 and I get an email out of the blue.

A documentary film maker called Mark from the United States wanted to jump on a call and get some further insight into HeadTalker and other similar services that exist (perhaps the most well-known being Thunderclap).

I was happy to help and we ended up speaking for around 40 minutes on everything from HeadTalker to social media marketing, and the documentary itself.

Things were about to wrap up when Mark asked what I did. I filled him in on the story of Task Pigeon and outlined that we were literally just about the launch!

That’s when he dropped a line about his brother-in-law being a successful startup founder himself. He was the CEO of a platform called StackSocial that helps promote new software and discounted offerings. He suggested I check it out.

Literally five minutes later I was on the site and submitted Task Pigeon for consideration.

Then a few days passed. The more I thought about it, the more I knew Task Pigeon was likely to be lost in the crowd. I am sure they get a flood of emails from all over the world each day. If I was going to make this work I needed to go direct.

I reached out to Mark And asked for an intro.

I knew it was a big ask, given we hardly knew each other but it was worth a try.

24 hours later I had my reply.

The particulars then took some time to pull together but it was worth pursuing. StackSocial have an email subscriber base of over 3 million, and partnerships with 15 tech related sites. Task Pigeon managed to get a mention in a number of them including:

Our campaign went live on 17 April 2017 and one week later we had, had some solid results.

31 new paying customers and total sales in excess of $2,000. From this Task Pigeon earned $900 USD or more than $1,000 AUD after taking into account the commission StackSocial take for marketing the promotion to their database and associated channels. (since then we have added even more customers, and crossed $1,000 USD in revenue).

While the revenue is obviously nice, this process has also allowed us to gain crucial feedback from people who are paying for our solution.

Their insights are extremely valuable in shaping the future direction of Task Pigeon. That, and their overall tone of the feedback we have received shows we are on the right track in terms of how we are approaching task management.

Some other benefits that have come from this campaign include:

  • A noticeable increase in web traffic, with the initial bump coming when the campaign went live on the 17th. It has continued to remain higher than the weeks preceding the campaign and is largely due to the fact that people appear to be taking a look at Task Pigeon before committing to buy.

  • We have also had a total of 190 + new users sign up for Task Pigeon. The campaign has essentially exposed us to a wider audience who are using our free tier. We can now market the benefits of our premium tier to them, further increasing the revenue generated from this campaign.

What this whole story really underscores to me is that my belief in giving back to the startup community is valid. It has now been two years since I started making a concrete effort to help other people first, without the expectation of return. And these efforts are now being rewarded.

Also, we were excited to release our new updated home page this week. If you haven’t already feel free to take a look.
